What is Social Networking?

Social networking. We have all likely heard of it before, but not everyone knows what it means? If you were asked to define what social networking was, would you be able to give an accurate definition? Unfortunately, most individuals cannot, even though it is likely that they participate in some form of social networking, especially online.

Social networking is defined as the grouping of individuals together into to specific groups, often like a small community or a neighborhood. Although social networking is possible in person, especially in schools or in the workplace, it is most popular online. This is because unlike most high schools, colleges, or workplaces, the Internet is filled with millions, if not more, of individuals who are looking to meet other Internet users and develop friendships.

When it comes to social networking online, websites are used. These websites are known as social networking websites. Social networking websites are, in a way, like an online community of Internet users. Depending on the social networking website in question, many of these online community members share a common bond, whether that bond be hobbies, religion, or politics. Once you are granted access to a social networking website you can begin to socialize. This socialization may include reading the profiles or profile pages of other members or even contacting them.

Facebook about to introduce movie and music 'ticker'

Facebook has just announced about introducing a music and movie "ticker" to the Facebook site.

This service will enable Facebook users to see what their friends are watching and listening to in real-time, Here is The Guardian report.

It has been rumoured that the "ticker" will be separate from Facebook's news feed, although some crossover is expected. Services such as Spotify and movie streaming websites are expected to lend their support from launch.

Mark Zuckerberg the man behind Facebook will unveil the feature at the social networking giant's f8 conference, taking place in San Francisco 22september. Zuckerberg is also expected to confirm partnerships with newspapers at f8, enabling Facebook users to read select publications within the social networking site.
Facebook's revenue reportedly doubled to $1.6 billion (£995m) in the first half of this year, despite increased competition from rival firms such as Google. The website boasts an estimated user base of more than 750 million.
Earlier this week, the company announced that it is improving connectivity with fellow social networking service Twitter, allowing users to pipe their profile directly to a connected account.

Competitor Google unveiled its Google+ social network earlier this year, inviting journalists and those with a tech background to try out the platform. The service opened to all users earlier today.

Blogger or Wordpress?

People very often ask this question to me what to use Wordpress or Blogger?

The two main hosted blog types, are Blogger and Wordpress – you'll find that whenever a discussion about where its best to host your blog, if you're not hosting it yourself, that these two are rated the highest.

So which of the two services is better?

Ultimately, both services will offer you a strong and solid base to blog from, but there are a couple of distinct differences between Blogger and Wordpress.

Wordpress

Wordpress hosted services are not designed to be used for commercial purposes – nevertheless, most people do.  You get a choice of themes (and without paying, you can't design your own theme) and a choice of plugins.  You can 'map' your domain to the site, for a fee, giving you the appearance of  hosting it yourself.

Wordpress hosted (at http://wordpress.com) is almost identical to hosting it yourself, other than the obvious 'bonus' of not actually needing to look after your install.  But its disadvantages include being at the mercy of a third party site, and needing to pay for additional 'services'.  These still cost less than buying hosting and setting the blog up yourself.

Blogger

Blogger is owned by Google, and is designed around ease of use.  You can 'ftp' your blog onto your own site, or host at a  domain (yourblogname.blogspot.com) of your choice.  Blogger doesn't use plugins, but does let you use your own theme, within certain limits.

A huge community has been built around Blogger, but unlike Wordpress.com they allow commercial based blogs as well as non commercial, which means they are more prone to spam.

In conclusion.  If you really can't host your own blog at your own site, play with both Wordpress and Blogger, because ultimately, the main difference will be between which one your more comfortable with.  And that's the one you should use.
